With each passing year, the popularity of mobile platforms among users is reaffirmed, as reflected here on Uptodown, where traffic from iOS and Android devices makes up more than 75% of the total. In the infographic below we’ve analyzed all the Android game downloads done on Uptodown during the first half of 2015. The results, which continue trends from previous months, give a good indication of current trends on this platform.

Subway Surfers, Pou, and Candy Crush Saga remain in their 2014 position among the top five. In terms of monetization, all except two games use the freemium model, with in-app purchases and in most cases a paid version that adds extra features and removes the in-game ads. Beyond the hard data, here are a few conclusions that can be drawn:

  • The Angry Birds phenomenon has lost steam but Rovio, the Finnish developer behind the saga, has served as a booster for games production in the Nordic country, as seen by the four Finnish games in the Top 20.
  • In terms of game genre, the trend has continued for users to prefer light, easy-to-play titles instead of deeper gaming experiences.
  • Although bigger data allowances and more available space on devices allow for the download of larger games, the size of the app is still crucial to users. Except for the two FIFA games, which each take up more than 1 GB of memory, the others are all much lighter.
  • Likewise, although Rovio has increased the number of games released under its name (5 games just to this point in 2015), it seems they haven’t found a successor for Angry Birds to preserve their position.
  • The success of the Five Nights at Freddy’s trilogy has boosted two of the saga’s titles into the Top 20, and they’re also the only ones considered a demo of the official game.
